Rob Alley Piper Past Pipe Major

Rob is the founder of the band and was our first Pipe Major. Rob has "owned a practice chanter since time immemorial," and has been taking and giving lessons for quite some time. He originally hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and has been in Ketchikan for the past 20 years. He has attended the Mastery of Scottish Arts Winter School twice and recently attended the CeltFest piping workshops in Nanaimo, BC. Rob is a retired Doctor of Chiropractic and is a licensed Physical Therapist. Rob's wife, Carol, came up with the band name "Misty Thistle Pipes & Drums" in early band start-up discussions. |
Jane Bolima Tenor Drum

Jane is the band co-founder and is our energetic Band Manager. She has played tenor drum for several years and has attended drumming workshops such as the Mastery of Scottish Arts Winter School, and has attended several Highland Games in the Pacific Northwest |
Brian Curtis Bass Drum
|
A member since 2007, Brian is a musician extraordinnaire. Along with MTP&D, he is a member of Paddy's Leather Breeches Irish band and several blue grass bands. He also plays upright bass, violin, banjo, guitar, and anything else with strings.

Hunter Davis Drum Major
|
Hunter is an original member of the band and is also the current band Vice President. He is an enthusiastic kilt-wearer, US Army Drill Sergeant (ret.), and all-around character. Hunter has attended a variety of highland games and piping and drumming workshops, including recent participation in the SFU-sponsored Piping Hot Summer Drummer.

Ellen Funk Tenor Drum

Ellen joined the band in 2007 as a tenor drummer and band secretary. Tenor drum is not her first instrument. She played sax in high school marching band and has taken to tenor drumming quite well with tutoring from Victoria Crowe. Ellen is a fast learner and really makes the tenor section look and sound great, and is our tenor drum section leader. |
Rachel Funk Tenor Drum

Daughter of Ellen Funk, Rachel has also been member since 2007. She is in concert, pep and jazz band and choir at Ketchikan High School, and is also in the Community Choir. She is also a member of Acedemic Decatholon. She is amazing on the tenor drum and has helped the band with all of our fundraisers, practices, concerts, and two parades. She is a Senior in high school and looking forward to attending Nursing School after that.

Steve Hales Piper

Steve is a founding member of the band and loves piping and Celtic music.

Barbara Massenburg Tenor Drummer

An original member of the band, Barbara works for the US Forest Service, is a priest in the Episcopal Church, attended the Mastery of Scottish Arts Winter School in 2006 and is doing pretty darn good.

Steven Perro Drum Sergeant
|
Steve joined the band in 2006 and was recently appointed as Drum Sergeant; way to go Steve! Steve is also a member of the popular Potlatch Band in Ketchikan. Steve is married and has children who are budding piper-drummer-dancers who marched with us in the last parade!

Bill Urquhart Pipe Major
|
Bill joined the band in the summer of 2007, having been taught by Dennis Stephens and Angus Smith at the Fairbanks Red Hackle Pipe Band in Fairbanks, Alaska. He became Pipe Major in 2008, and receives regular tuition from professional United States Champion piper Jori Chisholm in Seattle. Bill enjoys both band playing and piobaireachd, and recently competed as a soloist at several games in the British Columbia Pipers Association. Bill was born and raised in Ketchikan, is husband of Schoenbar Middle School science teacher Frankie Urquhart, and father to four children, Liam, Neila, Torran, and Kinsey. Bill is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Alaska Southeast.
